1.ICVCM Rejects Carbon Credits Based on Renewable Energy
The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) has decided not to allow carbon credits from existing renewable energy methodologies, which make up nearly a third of the voluntary carbon market, to be labeled with its Core Carbon Principles (CCP). This decision is based on the concept of “additionality,” where the projects might have proceeded without the financial incentives from carbon credits. Annette Nazareth, ICVCM Chair, emphasized the importance of maintaining a high-integrity carbon market. The ICVCM aims to set global standards for carbon credits, focusing on verifiable impact and adherence to the latest scientific and best practices. While the current renewable methodologies are excluded, the ICVCM is open to reviewing more rigorous methodologies in the future.
2. SEC Defends its Climate Disclosure Rule in Court
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) defended its new climate reporting rule in court, arguing that the disclosures are crucial for investors to assess the value of investments and that the SEC has the authority to mandate such disclosures. The SEC emphasized the importance of consistent and comparable climate-related information, given its impact on companies' financial performance. The rule, which requires public companies to disclose climate risks and greenhouse gas emissions, faced legal challenges, but the SEC is committed to defending it. The SEC also addressed concerns about the rule's costs and its authority, noting investor demand for such information.
