1.EU Delays Mandate on Business Supply Chains to Eliminate Deforestation

The European Union has postponed the implementation of its Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) by one year, extending compliance deadlines to December 2025 for large businesses and June 2026 for micro and small businesses. The delay is influenced by lobbying from countries like Indonesia and internal EU stakeholders, raising concerns about the EU's commitment to combating deforestation. Environmental groups have criticized this decision as a step back from environmental leadership, while businesses are urged to continue preparing for compliance with EUDR requirements.

During the decommissioning process, which begins in October, around 350 employees and contractors will either be redeployed within Uniper or phased out by 2026. The transition away from coal underscores a dramatic shift in the UK’s energy landscape, where coal once contributed 70% to the energy mix in the 1980s but has now dropped to just 1% in recent years.

Environmental advocates, like Doug Parr from Greenpeace UK, praised this move, urging other nations to follow suit by phasing out oil and gas. This transition comes at a time when the upcoming COP28 summit will focus on accelerating global efforts to combat climate change.

Britain's broader green energy strategy, led by the newly elected Labour government, is set to boost investments in offshore wind, tidal, and nuclear energy, aiming to replace fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives. The creation of a publicly owned energy entity will further spearhead these green initiatives, cementing the UK's role as a leader in global decarbonization efforts. The decommissioning of Ratcliffe-on-Soar serves as both a symbolic and practical step, setting a precedent for other countries like Italy, France, Germany, and Canada, which are also moving towards ending coal-based electricity.

According to the report, 32% of companies now have their CFOs as the accountable executives for sustainability, with an additional 16% sharing this responsibility with Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs). However, resource challenges persist, as 60% of companies struggle to predict the resources needed to meet emerging reporting standards. Despite these hurdles, 35% of businesses are already seeing increased revenue and innovation from their sustainability initiatives, highlighting the significant value creation potential for those integrating sustainability into their core strategies.

4.Climeworks and Coca-Cola HBC Collaborate on World’s First CO₂-Neutral Sparkling Water

This partnership not only reduces emissions but also addresses the food and beverage industry's ongoing CO₂ shortages by providing a sustainable and consistent carbon source. Climeworks' innovative technology captures CO₂ through air collectors, filters, and heat, setting a new industry standard for carbon-neutral beverage production. The collaboration highlights the potential of DAC to revolutionize the beverage sector and expand into other industries like agriculture and fuel production.

By 2024, the programme aims to encompass suppliers that represent 44% of Unilever's Scope 3 GHG emissions, including sectors like palm, oleochemicals, and petrochemicals. Collaborative efforts with suppliers like Weener Plastics and Ball Corporation are central to this approach, as they actively contribute data on their Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) to help drive meaningful emission reductions.

Unilever’s updated Climate Transition Action Plan (CTAP) indicates that this programme will play a significant role in meeting its science-based targets by 2030. As suppliers like Weener Plastics and Ball Corporation work to reduce emissions, they also help Unilever gain a more comprehensive understanding of its supply chain's climate impact. This initiative supports Unilever’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2030, while also enhancing the sustainability practices of its partners. Through strategic partnerships and shared value chain initiatives, Unilever aims to create a broader impact on both environmental performance and industry-wide climate action.
